Discover the Birds of the Quetzal Trail
El Sendero de los Quetzales is one of Panama’s premier birding trails, with a remarkable variety of species concentrated in its lush lower and mid-elevation cloud forests. Even without reaching the summit, visitors can expect rewarding encounters with both colorful showpieces and quieter forest specialists.
Stars of the Show: The trail is named for the Resplendent Quetzal, one of the most sought-after birds in Central America. While sightings are never guaranteed, this is one of the best places in Panama to look for them.
Bird Families You’ll Encounter: Expect tanagers flashing through the canopy, orioles and icterids in the edges and openings, and woodpeckers drumming in the taller trees. Mixed flocks often bring along flycatchers, foliage-gleaners, and thrushes like the Black-faced Solitaire with its haunting song.
Endemics & Highland Specialties: The region is home to several Chiriquí Highlands specialties, such as the Yellow-thighed Brushfinch and Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher. These add a real sense of place for visiting birders.
Habitats on the Route: The walk passes through moss-draped oak forest, shaded ravines, and patches of bamboo and secondary growth. This mix of habitats means you’ll see different sets of birds as you go.
With more than 300 bird species recorded in this section of the park, each visit brings fresh surprises. Our Principal, Mishael, knows the calls and favored trees of the local birds, helping you maximize your chances of spotting the rare and the remarkable.
